On Wednesday 16th January 2019, some of the Year 5 and 6 children had the pleasure of participating in the Sports Hall Athletics Level 3 Competition against three other school from Coventry East.
We arrived early at The Alan Higgs Centre. The atmosphere grew in tension as the other schools entered the hall. The whistle blew kicking off the competition… The sprint races. The girls zoomed down the track taking the first win closely followed by the boys. The hall erupted with cheering fans and applause for the participants. Throughout the morning, various events took place including javelin, chest push, vertical jump, triple jump and long jump. A special mention must be given to one of the team’s favourite event – the speed bounce. Our champions Lily and Ben managed to achieve 60 bounces and 54 bounces in just 20 seconds!!! The competition was close, the children became more nervous by the minute but everyone was ready! ‘I’m ready to win’ (Hollie, Year 5). Mr Hancock and Callum had prepared the team very well.
Towards the end of the competition, despite their numerous wins in the various events, the children started to doubt their chances of winning. After a long but exciting morning the results were in…CHAMPIONS! Once again, the hall erupted with cheers from the children and staff from EGPS.
The team will now go on to participate in the next round which will take place in March. The school team have never won at this level, so we are all extra proud of their effort and teamwork. An amazing achievement.
