Art Still Life – Sketching Techniques

At Art Skills Academy, our KS1 and KS2 pupils have been developing their drawing skills by exploring shading techniques using sketching pencils. This exciting unit focused on creating still life drawings while learning how to add shadows and depth to make artwork look more realistic.

The children began by experimenting with different pencils, discovering how light and dark tones can be created by changing pressure and pencil type. They practised simple shading techniques such as light and dark shading, blending, and layering, helping them understand how artists show form and texture. KS1 children focused on basic shading and recognising light and dark areas, while KS2 pupils developed more detailed shading to show shape, contrast, and depth.

This project encouraged creativity, careful observation, and patience. The children were proud of their work and enjoyed seeing how a few simple shading techniques could transform their drawings.

We are so impressed with the progress made at Art Skills Academy and look forward to building on these skills in future art lessons!
