This week the Nursery children have been learning about all things cold and frosty in our mini project ‘Winter Wonderland’.
We learned a new snowman exercise dance called ‘Snowman Freeze’ and used sponges cut into circles, triangles, oblongs and squares to print our own snowmen. The children named the 2d shapes and thought about their properties.
Mrs Linday told a story about cow who had a hole in his scarf. His friends tried to help but they all had the wrong shapes! Luckily, they found the correct shape in the end!
We played an icicle game where the children rolled a dice and printed the correct number of circles on their icicles. They then compared the number of circles with their friends to see who had more and who had fewer.
Using the Little Wandle phonics scheme the children learned the sound ‘m’ and played lots of games to develop their phonemic awareness and oral blending.
We had a Winter themed small world where the children enjoyed making igloos for the penguins and polar bears. We also learned about other animals that live in cold places such as arctic foxes and snow leopards.
In Science the children explored ice melting and we described how it feels. There were lots of hidden treasures in the ice such as sparkly pipe cleaners, feathers and sequins.
We also had lots of fun in PE using the large apparatus!
Other activities included discussing the changes in weather in Winter and the importance of wrapping up warm with hats, gloves and scarves. The children enjoyed dressing the baby dolls in their winter clothes.
Learning some new songs with actions; a Penguin Dance, the Winter Hokey Pokey and Mr Tumble’s Winter song.
Icy art-Investigating frozen paint and discovering what happens when the paint cubes melt and the colours mix together!
Winter themed pencil control activities.
