Soil Investigation- Science

As part of our Science work this week our task was to investigate soils from our local environment, then to make comparisons and to identify features of different soil types. We discovered that soils are made from tiny pieces of eroded rock, air and organic matter and to understand that soil is one of the world’s most important natural resources supporting a wide range of food chains. Soil holds water and nutrients and provides anchorage for roots.

We collected samples from different areas in the school grounds and followed a matrix diagram to identify the type of soil whether it was clay, silt or sandy. It was quite hard work digging into the ground! We even had to roll it into a ball and flatten the soil in our hands to see if it was a clay soil. Messy stuff!!
