Bringing Colour and Creativity to the Playground: Chalk Mandalas

For Outdoor Art Skills Academy, we’re finding new ways to bring joy, mindfulness, and creativity to our school playground—and one of the most exciting activities has been creating chalk mandalas.

What Are Mandalas?

Mandalas are circular designs made up of repeating patterns and shapes. Across many cultures, they represent unity, balance, and creativity. When drawn with chalk on pavement, mandalas become a beautiful, temporary art form that encourages children to focus, relax, and work together.

How We Created Them

Children begin with a central point, then work outwards in rings—adding shapes, petals, and patterns in bold colours. Some mandalas are created individually, while others grow into large group projects that stretch across the playground. Each one is unique, and although the rain eventually washes them away, these chalk mandalas remind us that creativity doesn’t have to be permanent to be powerful.
