Happy New Year! We have loved welcoming the children back this week and have had a very packed first week of the new year. In Phonics we went over any gaps for phase 2 and tricky words, in maths the children used their perceptual subitising skills moving from dots to dice arrangements, noticing sub-groups in larger groups and using a number track. Our theme for this week was ‘Winter’ and we started it off by reading Little Penguin Lost, discussing the characters and setting and predicting what happens next. We then wrote our own posters about the missing penguin, stuck them around school and searched for foot prints outside! We made our own penguins in the creative and junk modelling areas and then used them in small world play. We had a messy time in the maths area practising our number formation and enjoyed reading lots of Winter books. We learnt lots about Arctic animals, grouping them into Arctic and not Arctic or both and had a great time on our long, cold wintery walk where we also made a snowman!
