Dol-y-Moch: Thursday (Day 2)

In complete contrast to the glorious weather we had yesterday, today’s images are noticeably more Dol-y-Moch-esque! This, however, did not impact on the fun that was had by all.

Morning Routines

As well as our morning tasks, like setting up for breakfast, presenting the weather and getting ready for room inspections, some did get a little time for playing games. Generally, all room scores have improved!

Mountain and Mine – Group F

Our instructor for today, Poppy, took us by mini-bus to a nearby mine, where we trekked up the mountain side to find its entrance. Despite it being quite warm, all-be-it a little wet, the mine was surprisingly cool. Fortunately, we were well prepared with extra layers, wellies, head lamps and helmets. Part way through our journey into the mine, we stopped for lunch by candle-light. We also had hot chocolate and biscuits. We were very, very well prepared! Thanks Poppy!

As we progressed through the mine, and eventually the mountain, we had amazing views and learnt a lot about slate mining. We even got to try some of it for ourselves using a hammer and chisel!

Navigation and Beach

Today, groups A-C joined together to take part in orienteering and beach activities. Our instructors today were Gwydion, Jonny and Tom. Starting with navigation, we prepared ourselves with an on-site group activity, where we had to find places around Dol-y-Moch!

Then, after an early lunch, we ventured over towards a lake to begin our independent walk. We had to use a map to find our way to various checkpoints, making sure that we were following the right direction – excellent geographical skills were used here by all! We all got back to our final checkpoint and had a small break with hot chocolate, biscuits and geese.

After this forest-filled adventure, we went straight to the beach, where we completed our task of rock-pooling and found interesting sea-creatures amongst the various rocks in the sea. This was very wet, very soggy and very interesting! Finally, we warmed ourselves up with a lovely Welsh ice-cream! Well done to all – very resilient and extremely responsible.

Rock and Water

Group D’s instructor for today, Gwydion, took us to Borth Y Gest, a nearby beach, where we tried a range of rock-face climbing skills. After this, we went to the River Teigl were we had lots of fun gorge walking and even jumping into the river!

Mountain and Mine – Group E

Group E’s instructor for today was Martin, and we started off by climbing to the mine via the mountain side. Along the way, we had a go at writing on slate, like they did during Victorian times! We then walked through various levels of the Wrysgan mine. We even had a go at abseiling part of it!
