This week in Year 3, we became shadow scientists! As part of our science topic on light and shadows, we took our learning outside to explore how shadows are made and how we can change their size and direction.
We started our investigation outside in the bright sunshine. Each group took turns standing in the sun while a partner drew around their shadow using chalk. We noticed something very interesting — as the sun moved across the sky, our shadows changed! In the morning, they were long. At midday, they were short. And later in the afternoon, they grew longer again but pointed in a different direction.
Next, we went back inside and used torches to create shadows in a darkened classroom. We used small toys and held torches at different angles and distances. We discovered that:
- When we moved the torch closer, the shadow got bigger.
- When we moved the torch further away, the shadow got smaller.
- When we moved the torch around the object, the shadow changed direction.
We had lots of fun experimenting and asking questions like real scientists. It was amazing to see how light and shadows work together — and how we can control what happens by changing the light source!
Well done, Year 3, for your fantastic teamwork, curiosity, and scientific thinking!
